Director of Winemaking and Cellar Operations-Purple Wine + Spirits

Position Summary:

The Director of Winemaking and Cellar Operations is responsible for the overall management of wine processing operations of the winery.  In addition to the processing of the company’s own brands, the Director also manages contract processing for external customers, directs the development and implementation of quality, style, and cost goals to meet winemaking objectives for all Purple wine brands.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Manage the day-to-day operations of the winemaking, cellar and laboratory teams according to established standard operating procedures, policies and agreed upon budgets to meet the winery goals for both quality and financial budgetary objectives

  • Participate in and help foster an environment of continual improvement with a focus on safety, quality and profitability.
  • Help to create the annual revenue and expense budget for above departments with the Finance Department, Executive Management and other cross-functional teams.
  • Maintain operations of all winemaking, cellar, barrel and laboratory activities that produce maximum quality of product that also optimizes efficiency of labor and equipment.
  • Oversee the Winemaking operations at multiple facilities.
  • Plan and execute an efficient harvest and crush plan at multiple facilities.
  • Establish and keep current all standard operating procedures related to the facility according to current ISO 9001 Standards.
  • Oversee the planning, procurement, and processing of grapes and wine to support company-owned national wine brands, company-owned control labels and private label programs.
  • Oversee third-party custom crush and wine processing to provide excellent customer service within an optimized operation.
  • Work with the Director of Supply Chain to ensure the consistent provision of wines for scheduled bottlings.
  • Oversee the procurement of all juice and wine samples (including fining and blending trials) in accordance with established guidelines and expectations from clients and staff.  Supervise sampling programs and protocol.
  • Oversee, manage and coordinate winemaking and cellar staff, including the hiring of temporary labor at two 5,000-ton facilities during harvest months.
  • Develop and implement wine processing strategies, ranging from storage through blending, sensory evaluation and defining blending requirements.
  • Plan and implement long-term, short-term and spot wine and grape sourcing, purchasing and negotiation of contracts with participation from Executive Management, Director of Supply Chain and other team members.
  • Oversee Quality Assurance laboratory.
  • Oversee winemaking and cellar staffs’ management of third-party cellar, barrel and winemaking services.
  • Help to strategize, implement and manage capital expansion programs.
  • Ensure compliance with TTB, state and federal legislation as appropriate.
  • Directly manage, train and oversee all winemaking staff, cellar managers, barrel managers and laboratory managers.
  • Develop employees for future growth.
  • Maintain excellent communications and relationships with customers and co-workers.
  • Provide leadership in further developing the winery as a premium producing site.

  • Ability to make sound decisions.
  • Minimum 5 years winemaking experience involving crush.
  • Strong technical background desired.
  • Knowledge of personnel supervision, procedural practice and development.
  • Good organizational, supervisory and communication skills.
  • Well-developed wine tasting skills.
  • Deep understanding of major aspects of winemaking, laboratory procedures, bottling and production work flow.
  • Clear commitment to high quality and attention to details.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and perform duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with the company’s value of exhibiting the highest quality standards in all endeavors.
  • Maintains team environment in winemaking department and production.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally
  • Strong computer skills, including Excel, Word, Outlook.
  • Microsoft Navision with Vintegrate preferred.
  • Ability to perform math at an algebraic level.


  • Minimum 8 years’ winemaking and management experience. B.S. in Enology or Viticulture, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish desirable.
  • An ability to maintain good relationships with growers, suppliers, customers, and colleagues.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Strong commitment to the achievement of results.
  • Excellent planning and project management skills.
