Job Title:  Winemaker

Reports To:  Director of Winemaking

Position Summary: 

The winemaker position supports the organization through administration of client winemaking directives.  The winemaker partners with cellar activities and laboratory work. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day to day operations of the winery according to established standard operating procedures, policies and agreed upon budgets.
  • Train and manage cellar and laboratory employees.
  • Establish and keep current all standard operating procedures related to the facility according to ISO9001.
  • Schedule the procurement of all juice and wine samples (including fining and blending trials) in accordance with established guidelines and expectations from clients and staff.  Supervise sampling programs and protocol.
  • Be aware of the flow of work in the cellar, and of analysis priorities.
  • Generate cellar work orders per clients’ instructions.
  • Order lab chemicals and equipment as needed.
  • Order cellar chemicals and supplies as needed.
  • Ensure the highest level of orderliness and cleanliness in the cellar and lab.
  • Recommend measures to improve efficiency and performance in the cellar and lab.
  • Ensure that all tank and barrel fermentations are carried out according to clients’ instructions and with the best possible winemaking conditions.  Ensure that any special fermentation protocols are completed properly.
  • Monitor yeast and malo-lactic fermentation conditions (lab and sensory analysis, fermentation temperature).
  • Prepare malo-lactic cultures, and schedule build-ups for all lots of wine.
  • Alert clients of any slow or stuck yeast or malo-lactic fermentations.
  • Ensure proper treatment of wine (SO2, topping, temp control) as soon as fermentations are complete.
  • Possess the ability to oversee and operate all crush equipment.
  • Answer client’s questions about the inventory, intended use and status of all of their wines.
  • Logistical coordination of receipt and shipping of clients’ grapes and wines.
  • Communicate all winemaking requests to Cellar personnel.  Follow up to see that requests have been completed correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain excellent communications and relationships with customers and co-workers.
  • Other duties as requested by the Director of Winemaking.

Qualifications:

  • High level of organization
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Ability to make sound decisions
  • Minimum 5 years winemaking experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally
  • Preferably Spanish speaking
  • Strong computer skills, including Excel, Word, Outlook, Navision
  • Ability to perform math at algebraic level
