THE OPPORTUNITY

The General Manager will be responsible for directing winery production, fiscal management, marketing and sales in both wholesale and DTC. In addition, create and manage strategic plans and related budgets to maintain and achieve future profitability.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The General Manager position reports directly to the CEO and the Board of Directors.

Reporting to the General Manger is the Winemaker, Regional Sales Managers, Tasting Room Manager, DTC Manager, Compliance, Hospitality/Events Manager and the Controller.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and recommend for approval specific short and long-range budgets and strategies to achieve company goals. This requires a focus on brand positioning and attendant action relative to management and physical facilities.
  • Organize, lead and delegate detailed responsibility to the winery to accomplish approved operating plans within budgets.
  • Implement and direct financial controls and reporting for both management and tax accounting.
  • Determine capital needs and recommend fiscal strategy to accomplish operational goals and improve facilities in support of these goals.
  • Review current distribution and consumer direct marketing strategy and recommend action to the Board of Directors to improve profitability. Execute approved changes.
  • Enhance the winery and vineyard assets to deliver on the brand priorities.
  • Exhibit stewardship and respect for the tradition of winegrowing involvement in the region.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelors Degree in Business or related field, or equivalent education and experience.
  • MBA preferred with an emphasis in business and marketing experience in the wine industry.
  • 15 years or more experience in 3 tier sales and marketing with a winery.
  • 5+ years in a senior management position of a winery.
  • Significant exposure to and ability to understand management of strategic planning, budgeting, production, marketing and financial functions.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to formulate a plan for long-term success and gain support for the vision and implementation of the plan.
  • Ability to accept direction and work as a team member with an active board of directors.
  • Experience in strategizing, forecasting, inventory management and hands-on leadership of sales and marketing.
  • Boardroom quality preparation and presentation skills.
  • Valid driver’s license; physical ability to travel both by car and plane and to visit multiple locations both inside the winery and in the vineyards; ability to climb stairs; ability to sit and operate a computer and ability to lift and carry 40+ lbs.
  • Must Have Skills: Specific understanding of luxury retail environments and their operations.
  • Comprehensive analytical, strategic and tactical skills (i.e. must be able to both create and execute ideas)on both the Retail and Wholesale channels.
  • Proven P&L responsibilities with a deep understanding of winery finance and operations.
  • Entrepreneurial style with experience in a structured environment.
  • Adaptability and openness to change. Well-rounded interpersonal skills including ability to coordinate with multiple departments.
  • Excellent analytical and creative skills. Keen attention to detail with effective time and project management skill.
  • Passionate about wine and the varying dynamics specific to the wine business.
