THE POSITION

The Supplier Relations/Sourcing Manager provides assistance and support, to the Winery Operations Team while developing mutually beneficial relationships and interfacing with suppliers.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position will report to the Director of Winemaking.

LOCATION

The position is based in Northern California.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Foster supplier relationships by visiting vineyards and facilities on a regular basis to ensure that pre-determined vineyard practices and winemaking, aging and storage protocols are being followed.
  • Functions as a liaison between Cooper’s Hawk and its bulk wine suppliers and grape growers; develops business relationships that will be mutually beneficial. 
  • Monitors and reports on grape ripening status and all aspects of crop development and forecasts crop tonnages for contracted vineyards and ensures harvest parameters are adhered to.
  • Works closely with suppliers and brokers to maintain a grape and bulk wine availability list to enable sourcing when required for the appropriate price, quality and quantity.
  • Routinely perform sensory analysis of bulk wine available for purchase and report findings to the Director of Winemaking.
  • Maintain and update contact lists of all current, past, and potential bulk wine Sellers grape growers and custom crush facilities.
  • Work with the Director of Winemaking and VP of Winery Operations to set sourcing strategy and to determine cost targets.
  • Responsible for contributing to the annual planning process and Product/Crop Assessment process; identify critical issues/opportunities; develop strategic recommendations to management on how to optimize near-term growth.
  • Ensure timely production, delivery, and receipts of vineyard contracts and sales proposals.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning process; identify and assess strategic issues; lead strategic discussion and where necessary, manage strategic initiatives.
  • Assess new business opportunities; assess potential impact and formulate strategic recommendations in response to changes in the market both domestically and internationally.
  • Manage short and long-term fruit and bulk wine supply by making recommendations to the Director of Winemaking and VP Winery Operations for targets for price, quality, and terms including the length of contracts during contract negotiations.
  • Organize pre-harvest supplier meetings to establish goals and requirements for the coming vintage.
  • Organize routine sensory analysis of contract wines with suppliers and report findings to the Director of Winemaking.
  • Work with Director of Winemaking to determine and communicate winemaking protocols for contract wines.
  • Collaborate with winemaking team on initiatives to increase wine quality and facilitate communication between growers, bulk wine suppliers and the winemaking team.
  • Coordinate domestic and international bulk movements with suppliers, the winemaking team, and the logistics team.
  • Communicate overall company directives and apply them to team, individual and grower partner objectives.
  • Participate in Wine profiling exercises with the Winemaking team.
  • Oversee bottling at 3rd party facilities.
  • Attends various international and domestic wine trade shows. Actively participates in regional and state viticulture groups.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Viticulture, Ag Business, Enology, Winemaking, or Business Administration plus 2 years agriculture, ranch/vineyard management, or winemaking experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Grower Relations experience and Extensive knowledge of the bulk wine trade
  • Experience negotiating terms of contracts.
  • Experienced in auditing winemaking and cellar records.
  • Experience in understanding winery sanitation.
  • Experience reading, analyzing, and interpreting general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. 
  • Experience writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. 
  • Experience effectively presenting information and responding to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Skilled in the use of MS Excel, MS PowerPoint at a basic level; MS Word and MS Outlook at an intermediate level.
  • Skilled in defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions.  
  • Experience with performing work that is varied and may be somewhat difficult in character, usually involving limited responsibility and requiring frequent evaluation, originality or ingenuity.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; be a self-starter when executing tasks.
  • Experience with dealing with confidential materials and situations.
  • Proficiency in recordkeeping and data gathering along with making day to day observations.
  • Experience with working on an individual basis, as well as being a team player.
