Director/Vineyard Management-Somerston Estate

The Vineyard Manager/Director (VM) is responsible for the day-to-day management of
all vineyard activities while under the direction of the General Manager.

  • The VM must ensure that the highest quality of wine grapes are produced for the Somerston Estate.
  • Implementation and enforcement of the highest quality vineyard practices, techniques, quality controls, and workplace safety.
  • Managing the vineyard budget, ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, and complete administrative responsibilities.
  • Vineyard development and redevelopment management and oversight while, managing the vineyard and estate assets and other special projects. 
  • The VM will supervise, teach and mentor permanent workers, temporary vineyard workers, interns, and others as identified, in compliance with Somerston Estate policies, practices and the employee handbook.
  • The VM must have at least a bachelor’s degree and 10 years’ experience as a vineyard manageror foreman, strong management skills, expert knowledge of the vineyard business, operations and viticulture, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to think and reactquickly and professionally. Vineyard development experience is a requirement.
  • This position is a senior management role in the company. The right candidate will be a visible member of the management team, the wine industry, and the community. The qualified candidate must continue to build on the success achieved in the vineyards thus far and be able to execute our 10 year development plan.


DELIVERABLES
o Produce the highest quality fruit for sale at the highest possible price.
o Run a well-organized vineyard operation, build a skilled and loyal workforce, and ensure a
safe work environment.
o Implement time sensitive viticulture practices.
o Implement standard operational procedures for timely and accurate operations/reporting.
o Certification of vineyards by both NGLC and CSWA.
o All compliance reporting.


ROLE & RESPONSIBILITY
The VM is responsible for managing the Company’s vineyards, vineyard employees, and all
associated assets of the Somerston Estate. The VM will implement quality growing strategies
and procedures that meet and exceed the company’s goal of becoming a premier wine growing
estate in the Napa Valley. This position is responsible for implementing and enforcing vineyard
practices, providing leadership and mentoring to the vineyard team, assuring compliance with
regulations, providing a safe work environment and protecting company assets. Responsibilities
include:
• Vineyard Practices.

  • Pursue innovative ideas and technology to produce high quality fruit while increasing efficiencies.
  • Plan, schedule, manage, and produce work orders for all activities relating to vine care, including but not limited to frost protection, pruning, irrigation, suckering, hazardous materials inventory, licenses and permits.
  • VM must reasonably observe any hazardous materials and toxic substances actually known to be present in any building or improvement forming a part of the vineyards or otherwise located on the vineyards.
  • VM shall notify all persons and entities (including, but not limited to, all employees, contractors, vendors and suppliers) to whom or to which notice is required to be given by VM or General Manager under any notification laws and shall post warnings as and when required by the notification laws

Vineyard Development and Redevelopment

  • Collaborate with the General Manager to develop and implement detailed plan and budget for new vineyard development and redevelopment.
  • Request bids for materials, labor and equipment.
  • Supervise the day to day activity of each project, meeting with consultants, engineers, and contractors. Ensure the quality of work meets the company’s standards and that workplace safety is maintained.
  • Ensure that approved plans are followed during construction and permits are signed off by the appropriate agency

• Asset Management

  • Manage, develop, maintain, and repair the irrigation system and all related equipment.
  • Develop a preventive maintenance program. Work with the mechanic to ensure
  • all vineyard-related equipment is maintained and kept in good working condition.
  •  Suggest replacement of aging or obsolete equipment based on the information and data collected from repairs and specific vineyard needs.
  • Maintain, repair and replace vineyard infrastructure as necessary. Purchase replacement plant material that is certified and clean. Purchase supplies and equipment as advisable or necessary.
  • Supervise, and monitor independent contractors responsible for repair and maintenance of the vineyards.
  • Develop, promote and implement a responsible, safe and workman like environment.
  • Designate a safety officer from the vineyards crew.
  • Hold regular monthly meetings to promote a safe and successful work environment.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of all vineyard equipment and products.
  • Keep the General Manager and Owner informed on a regular and sometimes
  • immediate basis, as applicable, as to the happenings on the estate and vineyards
  • including without limitation with respect to employees and contract workers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
• 10 years vineyard management experience.
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Must be an inspirational and effective leader, teacher, manager, and mentor.
Must Be able to effectively communicate with Spanish speaking employees.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Flexibility to work different schedules/hours/additional hours when necessary.
